Are You the Bottleneck in Your Own Business? Take This Diagnostic

Read Time: 4 minutes

Most founders don’t want to hear it, but I’ll say it anyway:

YOU might be the reason your business isn’t growing.

Not your team. Not the market. Not the algorithm (yawn!)

But YOU.

Not because you’re incompetent, of course. You’re probably the most capable person in your business… but that’s actually the problem! You’re doing too much, probably holding on too tight and you’re slowing down your own growth without realising it.

This is the reason I created the Founder Bottleneck Diagnostic – to help business owners identify where they’re the problem, and what to do about it.

You can download the full diagnostic here, but this post will give you a preview of what’s inside and why this work matters.

The 5 Bottleneck Behaviours Killing Your Growth

This isn’t a personality quiz. It’s a real-world audit.

Founders who complete the diagnostic score themselves across five categories. Most find themselves nodding in recognition, and sometimes wincing.

1. Delegation & Control

If your motto is “it’s faster if I just do it myself,” this section is for you.

The most common symptoms:

  • Re-doing tasks after delegating
  • Micromanaging or giving half-hearted briefs
  • Struggling to trust your team’s output

Every time you “just do it”, you’re teaching your team to rely on you. Unfortunately, that actually leads to even worse output, as your team may not even try, as they know you’ll come in and do it yourself afterwards.

2. Task Ownership & Prioritisation

You’re stuck in the weeds. Working all the time but nothing feels done.

Symptoms include:

  • Working on urgent but unimportant tasks
  • Having no real “CEO time” in your calendar
  • Constantly jumping between unfinished jobs

A healthy business doesn’t need you firefighting it every day. It needs you leading it.

3. Systems Avoidance

If everything you do feels custom, you don’t have a business – you have a very intense job.

Systems-avoidant founders:

  • Use their brain as their task manager
  • Don’t document repeatable processes
  • Keep reinventing the wheel

No SOPs = no scalability. If your team keeps asking “how do we do this again?” – you know you’re in trouble.

4. Team Trust & Micromanagement

You hired people, but you don’t really let them lead.

You:

  • Don’t give team members full ownership of outcomes
  • Check in constantly, even if nothing’s gone wrong
  • Struggle to relax when others are handling key tasks

You’re not building a team; you’re babysitting one. That’s exhausting. And totally unsustainable.

5. Overcapacity & Burnout Risk

The final section is a mirror you might not want to look into.

If your to-do list never ends, if rest feels like guilt, and if you’re always at 100% – your business will plateau.

Because businesses can’t grow if the founder is drowning.

What Your Score Tells You

Once you’ve completed the diagnostic, your results will shine a spotlight on how much you’re currently getting in your own way. It’s not about passing or failing – it’s about identifying blind spots that could be holding your business back.

Some people finish and feel a huge sense of relief: “OK, I’m not as bad as I thought.” Others realise they’re the common denominator in every bottleneck their team hits. Either way, it gives you something concrete to work with – a clear sense of where to focus your attention if you actually want to grow.

This isn’t just an exercise in self-awareness. When used properly, this diagnostic becomes a starting point for better delegation, clearer priorities, and real, sustainable progress – without you having to be the one who fixes everything yourself.

Why This Matters

Founders often wait until they’re burning out, or their revenue plateaus before fixing these issues.

But you don’t need to wait for a breakdown.

When I’m running a Strategy Day, this is one of the first tools I use with clients. It shows me exactly where the friction is. Once we see the patterns, we can fix the problem with processes, delegation plans, or team restructuring.

Sometimes the shift is as simple as:

  • Creating one SOP that saves 5 hours a week
  • Hiring a VA to take over calendar management
  • Carving out protected time for strategic work

But it starts with awareness.

Your Next Step

You don’t need a personality overhaul. You just need visibility.
